Public Lab is excited to announce that this year the second annual Regional Barnraising will be in Chicago, IL, June 13th and 14th. The first day will be an unconference at CivicLab, and the second a day of field work at the KCBX Petcoke Piles.
The Public Lab Regional Barnraising is an event hosted by the Public Lab community. The event focuses on actively working to address environmental issues by engaging people to work collaboratively using local resources, science and DIY technology. In the spirit of bringing a community together to collectively raise a structure such as a barn, we come together to put ideas to test.
The Regional Barnraising is hosted in an ‘unconference’ style. This means that the agenda of the event is set while everyone is there at the beginning, and that the ultimate goal of the event is that it is participant driven. Participants in this event will represent a wide range of interests from technologists and designers, to social scientists and community organizers.
We encourage you and your constituents to join us for the weekend or even for a day!

What is a Public Lab Barnraising?
The Public Lab Barnraising is the closest thing we have to a Public Lab conference -- but with an emphasis on "doing stuff together" rather than just presenting/talking. We come together to develop tools, toolkits, supporting materials such as guides and tutorials, test the tools and develop new research directions and projects. An Annual Barnraising event is held each fall in Louisiana, and a Regional Barnraising is held each summer in a different location.
About Regional Barnraisings:
Last year, Public Lab ran the first ever Regional Barnraising event in the Northeast. This was a great way to draw new Public Labbers in, focus on regional issues and cater to people who are unable to travel to our yearly Barnraising in Louisiana.

Midwest projects such as hydrogen sulfide sensing, petcoke mapping and dust monitoring have laid the groundwork for a fantastic and dynamic regional event.
