Using color/contrast enhancement to see into water in aerial photos

This image is from Barataria Bay in early Oct 2011. The enhanced image is on the left. What are these interesting areas of color under the water's surface?

Also see this false-color gradient-map I did to bring out even more detail, though at the expense of colors:
