CHDK : Jpeg VS Raw

by Safidy | May 29, 2012 06:02 29 May 06:02 | #2232 | #2232

I have done some comparison between the Jpeg format and the Raw format from my Canon A800 then I took a picture with my Nikon D5100. So, you can compare it with the others and see wich format is more closer with my Nikon D5100.In my opinion, the Raw is more vivid than the Jpeg. What is CHDK? So, you can use open source software to convert raw to something readable. Honestly, I prefer the RawTherapee. Digikam UFRaw + GIMP RawTherapee

Hi Safidy, I assume you used CHDK to produce the camera RAW files. How did you convert them to something readable? I am looking for a way to batch convert hundreds of CHDK RAW files from a Canon A495 to tiff files (or some uncompressed format that normal programs can convert to tiff).

You can use open source software to convert raw to something readable. You can use UFRAW but you have to install gimp before. UFRAW + GIMP It's better to use Digikam with a Linux distribution. DIGIKAM

I use Photoshop but if you want something free you can use the RAWTHERAPEE. http://rawtherapee.com/downloads

Thanks Safidy,

I found UFRaw last week and it worked well, but I don't think it does batch processing. I tried Raw Therapee today and it is a much more complete program and does batch conversions. It crashed on the first batch of eight I gave it, but recovered and finished the batch on restart. It can convert to uncompressed tiff which is what ImageJ needs. I think it is the solution I was looking for.

Now I need to learn whether saving CHDK DNG is better than saving CHDK RAW files.

Can you do these CHDK RAW conversions in Photoshop?

Thanks again.

Actually I use Adobe Photoshop Lightroom which is very similar to RawTherapee, and he have 5 types of output format. JPEG,PSD (Photoshop format),TIFF,DNG and ORIGINAL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raw_image_format). So,with Adobe photoshop ligthroom you can use the CHDK DNG as well as the CHDK RAW and that means you can do these CHDK RAW conversions.

My Photoshop CS3 and Lightroom 3 don't seem to read CHDK raw files. Maybe I need newer versions.

Try to download this plugin (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4220) then install it and run your lightroom, maybe this plugin can solve your RAW compatibility.
