The Silly Putty rig, originally developed by Simon Harbord, is an interesting way of integrating pan and tilt functionality to a KAP rig without the use of electronics. It uses a rubber band linked to a hook, which passes through a cylinder stuffed with Silly Putty. The rubber band is then twisted, and the resistance from the silly putty forces the pan and tilt mechanisms to move at a slow, controlled pace.

My Design

I built two rigs using this concept, one that was based on Simon Harbord's design, and one of my own design. In my own design, I bent the frame by hand, rather than with the use of tools.

I used Fusion 360 to create a model which I could use to simulate the movement of the tilt mechanism, and also to make components to 3D print to be used in building the rig. The model and printable components can be found here on Thingiverse. Silly_Putty_Rig_2_-_Circular_v6.png
