Winds aloft: sensor overload

I have been including anemometers in the payload of kite flights for a few months (series of research notes here), and a goal has been to include two anemometers to compare their results. The Modern Device Wind Sensor Rev P has returned promising results, but the only way to know if the results are accurate is to include a sensor with a known track record on the same flight. Last week my seven foot Rokkaku was able to lift a NASA Aeropod Air Column Profiler and two KAPtery SkyPods.

If we count the temperature sensors (for internal calibration) on the real time clock and Wind Sensor Rev P, the total sensor count on the flight was 5 temperature, 3 pressure, 3 humidity, 2 wind speed, 1 wind direction, plus GPS (lon, lat, alt). There was a good wind that day, but not enough to lift all those sensors and a camera. So once again my KAP pursuits were set aside for the sake of science.

Figure 4. The entire flight lasted 1.5 hours, but only the NASA Aeropod was on the line for all that time. I reeled in line and added the Saturn V Rig halfway through when the wind had picked up. You can see the increase in wind speed at altitude with time, and also a good correlation between altitude and wind speed. These results are only from the Kestrel, and the altitude is not accurate because I didn't set the reference sea-level barometric pressure before the flight (I don't know how).

The superb match among the three datasets suggests that it is easy to measure barometric pressure.

The lowest temperature was recorded by the Kestrel which has its sensor completely exposed to the air flow. The BME280 sensors on the SkyPods are both inside the sensor pods (to reduce noise cause by wind), and are 1 to 3 degrees warmer than the Kestrel sensor. All five data series show good negative correlation with altitude. Fortunately for society, most of those who have decided to deny global warming are ignorant of the lesson here that it is really hard to measure the temperature of the atmosphere.

The absolute magnitude of the speed measurements differ substantially. I trust the results from the Kestrel for two reasons: 1) it costs $300 more than the hot wire sensor, and 2) the wind seemed to be about 13 to 16 mph (6 to 7 m/s) during this flight based on how hard the kite was pulling (at least it seemed to be greater than 9 mph (4 m/s)).

When the complete payload ascended for the second flight, I tried to let out line smoothly and also walked upwind steadily to keep the payload rising vertically instead of at an angle. In the video above you can see that I did not walk upwind fast enough to keep the payload from moving downwind as it rose. Next time I will walk backwards faster. The following three graphs are air column profiles for that ascent from 450 to 620 m (1475 to 2030 feet) above sea level. All three of the profiles show a point of inflection at about 540 to 550 m asl. It got windy at that altitude and the kite rose quickly and pulled the payload vertically about 60 or 70 m, but the temperature and humidity did not vary much during that fast ascent. This is totally the best evidence I have seen for government funded chemtrail atmospheric-modification.

I was very pleased to see the similarities between the Modern Device wind sensor and the Kestrel anemometer. The two data series tracked each other well with a similar amount of scatter. The difference in wind speed magnitude recorded by the two does not seem to be a hardware failure but instead is likely a lack of calibration of the hot wire sensor. Paul Badger, the developer of the sensor, posted in July about his attempts to improve the software calibration (the sensor also has internal hardware calibration). I could not get his calibration equation to return meaningful results. Paul suggested he was still working on calibrating the sensor, but nothing further has been posted. I guess I could use the results from this flight to adjust all my future results from the sensor. Or if anyone is interested in trying that, let me know and will post the data here.

Hi, Chris -- great post as usual!

I do have to ask about your comment regarding chemtrails -- I strongly suspect you put that there to see if anyone reads your post :-P So do I get a prize? Or are you fishing for someone else?

When I used to do commercial design work I used to put a clause on p7 of my contracts that the client would have to buy us a goat under certain unlikely circumstances. The only client ever to find that was happy to sign it.

A goat is way better than brown M&Ms.

But that is not exactly my motivation here because I'm sure everybody reads my research notes extremely carefully. And they probably agree that they have never seen any evidence better than mine for government funded chemtrail atmospheric-modification. Let me know if you are aware of any.

And yes, you do get a prize. It should have arrived Priority Mail already.

First, your video is awesome and I'm glad you explained the lines from pulling in the kite. I really like the look of the NASA anemometer--what is the price for that? I also liked the climate change line in there and found your notes about humidity interesting. Makes me wonder how birds are handling things in flight. Would love to engage the conversation on chem trails. #rabbitholefun

Thanks Zengirl. I don't think you can buy a NASA Aeropod. You can license the technology from NASA and manufacture them, but I don't know if anyone has done that yet. If you don't license the technology from NASA, you are not allowed to use it without NASA's permission. You are also not allowed to modify it, so when I added a rigid pendulum I probably violated patent law. I am impressed that I could be penalized for trying to help.

The anemometer on the Aeropod air column profiler is a Kestrel 5500 pocket weather meter. You can buy one for about $300.00. To measure wind speed, it has to be pointed into the wind. To do that on a kite flight, you could use a device with a tail that uses the wind to keep the Kestrel pointed into the wind. But NASA patented some version of that idea, so be careful or you could end up on the No Fly List like I probably am.

The Modern Device Wind Sensor I have been using does not have to be pointed into the wind so precisely, although it is somewhat sensitive to wind orientation. They say orientation influences the measurement by "about 15%" but they don't say which side of the sensor should be pointed into the wind. Regardless, a device to maintain the wind orientation is not as critical as it is with the Kestrel.

Unfortunately my wind sensor fell prey to my inattention last night. It has been attached to the Picavet cross on a Saturn V Rig, and I had to replace the gear on the Picavet shaft. I was not being careful enough with the exposed sensor and broke off the business end of the thing.


There is a copper trace in the loop that is severed. I will try to repair it, but I don't know how sensitive it will be to a big glob of solder in that trace. I think I would epoxy on a strengthening shaft if I could have a do-over. And the sensor is open source, so I would not be breaking any laws if I did that.

@cfastie well isn't that NASA item a bit complicated. Here's an Instructable that mentions that process. As for your wind sensor, that is really cool to see close-up although I'm sorry it snapped. It does look precarious and I think you could create something better if you repair it.

P.S. If you've violated any laws I'd love to follow in your footsteps. I suspect that is how the best inventions happen. :)

I'm putting together a page on the AS220 sensors and want to list this and another on there -- I hope that drives some interest in the SkyPod and other Kaptery kits!
