Question: Raspberry pi operating system for Lego spectrometer

by Aleksi12358 | July 09, 2018 20:24 | #16669

I am going to order raspberry pi zero w, camera and memory card with operating system installed. Which operating system I should choose Raspbian or Kodi? If it does not matter I will choose Raspbian.

I've only used Raspbian!

Yes. Kodi is a multimedia player Operating System used to have plugged to the TV and playing films and so on. Raspbian is a full GNU/linux operating system you'll be able to use as camera and many more: server, multimedia player, trail cam... Use the Desktop Raspbian and not the Lite version.

Then you need to go to Menu >> System tools >> Raspi config and activate the camera in the second tab "Interfaces"

Thanks for info.

I should have googled those operating systems and read about them. Those two operating systems are what web shop I was going to order parts from offers installed to sd card. I have installed Raspbian to sd card before but was going to be lazy this time.

I found raspberry pi zero w locally so I will not order anything from that web shop after all. My spectrometer will be ready in few days. I will go and buy parts tomorrow.

Only thing that is missing for my experiments is colorimeter reagents. I might buy single aquarium water test kit so that I have something to experiment with before my reagents arrive.

I will print case instead of build it from Lego.

Cooool! Shoot any doubt you find in the process ;D

Wow, eager to hear about your #colorimetry work!

I'm using Raspian Stretch, but it shouldn't matter too much so long as there is some sort of Camera control. There are lots of instructions around for Raspian, and a tutorial provided by the supplier I used here in AU. https://core-electronics.com.au/tutorials/raspberry-pi-zerow-headless-wifi-setup.html Setting up the camera is laid out in the section here https://publiclab.org/notes/partsandcrafts/12-03-2017/setting-up-the-raspberry-pi-camera-for-wireless-streaming
