Public Lab Wiki documentation

Overview

Public Lab organizers are community members that have been nominated to hold a position of leadership in Public Lab. Typically, these are people who are both key organizers in their local communities as well as key contributors to the broader Public Lab community through work on things such as the website and communications. The organizers list is always expanding; anyone can be nominated or nominate themselves, see below for process.

The Public Lab organizers list is an email list for this group. It serves to connect organizers with each other and work on initiatives such as #SpectralChallenge and barnstars. Typical emails are about upcoming events (sometimes there are speaking/travel opportunities),organizing local chapters, and other topics related to broad Public Lab community development rather than simply research.

The Public Lab organizers call is weekly on Thursdays. The time alternates between 9:20PST/11:20CST/12:20EST . The calls last about 35 minutes. If you are an organizer, to join, please add Public.Lab on Skype and add your Skype name to the Google Doc.

  • Natasia has served as the Gowanus Canal Conservancy's GLAM (Gowanus Low Altitude Mapping) project manager since October 2012. She holds undergraduate degrees in conservation biology and ecology. Her interest in mapping / GIS grew out of field research experience in Borneo, where she worked on orangutan conservation through mapping seasonal variations in their feeding ranges. Broadly, she is interested in using maps as a platform for education, raising awareness, and working toward environmental justice. She has roots in Philadelphia.

• Eric Kugler

• Shannon nominating, Second by Stewart L. Third by Scott E. Eric works for GroundworkNOLA in New Orleans. Currently they have an EPA urban waters grant to do mapping around the Green Slice corridor in the Lower 9th Ward which included Bayou Bienvenue. Eric has worked closely with both Scott and I on mapping different areas and has been advocating the use of Public Lab tools to a number of different schools and informal education programs throughout New Orleans. He participated in the barn raising and recently suggested re-starting the education working group through an "education happy hour model". The education working group had their first call this week.

• Kalyn Rosenberg and Sylvia Broude

• Shannon nominating, Second by Stewart L., Third by Chris Fastie Syliva is the ED of Toxics Action Center and Kalyn is the Vermont organizer. Currently TAC has a grant to use Public Lab tools in a number of different communities that they work with throughout the Northeast. Part of their job is to train people on how to use different Public Lab tools, so this list would be helpful for them to be apart of and as community organizers they will also be able to contribute alot back to the Public Lab organizers group.

Summary

The plots-organizers list is an email list for people that are both key organizers in their communities and key contributors to the Public Lab community through work on things such as the website and communications. The new list is based on the previous "team" list, where typical emails are about upcoming events (sometimes there are speaking/travel opportunities),organizing local chapters, and other topics related to the Public Lab community rather than simply research.

We're basically hoping to expand the list a bit to help connect organizers to one another and also to have a more transparent way to join the list.

We have a weekly call on Thursdays at 9:20PST/11:20CST/12:20EST until around 9:45/11:45/12:45

If you are an organizer, to join, please add Public.Lab on Skype and add your Skype name to the Google Doc.

Criteria (open to revision):

• a nomination (person nominating provides statement about why they are nominating) and 2 supporting nominations (i.e. an existing member nominates someone and 2 others would say “i second that” and “i third that”)
• self-nomination (a short statement about your work and the mission statement) + 2 supporting nominations
• other ideas?

• Eric Kugler

• Shannon nominating, Second by Stewart L. Eric works for Groundwerks in New Orleans. Currently they have an EPA urban waters grant to do mapping around the Green Slice corridor in the Lower 9th Ward which included Bayou Bienvenue. Eric has worked closely with both Scott and I on mapping different areas and has been advocating the use of Public Lab tools to a number of different schools and informal education programs throughout New Orleans. He participated in the barn raising and recently suggested re-starting the education working group through an "education happy hour model". The education working group had their first call this week.

• Kalyn Rosenberg and Sylvia Broude

• Shannon nominating, Second by Stewart L. Syliva is the ED of Toxics Action Center and Kalyn is the Vermont organizer. Currently TAC has a grant to use Public Lab tools in a number of different communities that they work with throughout the Northeast. Part of their job is to train people on how to use different Public Lab tools, so this list would be helpful for them to be apart of and as community organizers they will also be able to contribute alot back to the Public Lab organizers group.
